Apple Game Center To Go Head To Head With Xbox Live

As you probably all know by now, Apple has released its iOS update 4.1. Nothing new there then but, just in case you skipped through the new features in order to get the download over with as fast as possible I’ll assume you missed the part which introduced Apple’s Game Center app.

So, what is the Game Center app? Well, it looks like it’s Apple’s attempt at tapping into the Xbox Live and PSN market by mimicking the services both those networks offer. It is being billed as a “social gaming network” and will offer the ability to invite friends, compete in leader-boards and unlock achievements. Also it will power the online matchmaking for multiplayer games.

So far, according MCV, the reception towards Game Center has been mixed. The service will not work with iPhone 3G but will on 3GS and 4 models. Also, Apple are planning on releasing a new update in November which will allow iPad users to enjoy Game Center.

As for iPod Touch owners, Game Center will only work on third generation models or newer.
