Venus Williams played the women’s singles U.S. Open title match in 2002. She is now only one more victory away from advancing to the 2010 U.S. Open final.

In her quarterfinal match on Tuesday night, she faced a tough opponent. However, despite Francesca Schiavone’s remarkable efforts, the favored Williams won the match in two sets with 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Williams has a total of seven Grand Slam titles under her belt, including the 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open.

She is now the only American player left in the tournament after Sam Querrey lost yesterday his quarterfinal match.

Schiavone kept the match open for a long time, but struggled with her service. As the match went on, Venus gained her consistency back and claimed another victory in the New York tournament. The spectators honored Schiavone’s performance with standing ovations as she left the court.

Venus will now play the defending champion Kim Clijsters.
