David Beckham campaigning for England to host 2018 World Cup
David Beckham is a busy man. The English soccer star who is currently under contract at America’s MLS club L.A. Galaxy is also the vice-president of an initiative trying to get the approval to hold the 2018 World Cup in his home country. He also just attended the Fifa Under-17 women’s world cup in Trinidad.
Beckham planned this trip to honor a commitment to the Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, announcing that he would bring his soccer academy to the Caribbean. He and his academy staff will be teaching soccer skills to local players and coaches for six days starting on Sunday.
But it also sends a political signal to the Fifa. Beckham’s academy is a crucial part of his nation’s bid to get the 2018 Soccer World cup hosting rights. According to Beckham, Trinidad and Tobago has a long history and potential of producing excellent players. Plus he’s impressed with the enthusiasm the young people have for soccer and how much they enjoy the game.
