Kimiko Date Krumm advances at 2010 Pan Pacific Open
The top-seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark advanced to the third round of the 2010 Pan Pacific Open, alongside Japanese player Kimiko Date Krumm who celebrated her 40th birthday on Tuesday.
Date Krumm defeated Daniela Hantuchova, leading comfortably with 2-6, 6-0 and 4-0 before Hantuchova had to retire due to a right shoulder injury. One day after Date Krumm managed to upset the defending champion Maria Sharapova, she told the press that she might have been lucky because of her birthday.
The Japanese became a professional player in 1989 and won the Tokyo tournament in 1995. One year later she decided to retire, but came back to the tour 12 years later. This year she defeated Dinara Safina which made her the oldest woman to best a top 10 player.
Wozniacki easily cruised to her win over Greta Arn of Hungary with two straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
She is now scheduled to play the 16-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.
