Vermont maple syrup producers are up in arms about Pinnacle Foods’ new product, “Log Cabin: All Natural Syrup.” They say Log Cabin imitation maple syrup is far from natural. The problem is, the new packaging being used to market it closely resembles that of the natural true maple syrup producers.

Pinnacle Foods is now using the same beige plastic jugs that Vermont maple syrup producers have used for years causing concern among officials in Vermont. The Vermont product is 100 percent maple syrup. The new Log Cabin product only contains about 4 percent pure maple syrup. This could mean that Pinnacle is violating labeling regulations set by the FDA.

As a result, Peter Welch, US Rep of Vermont is now requesting that the FDA investigate whether or not Log Cabin is violating any laws. However, reports say that the FDA does not have any specific regulation on what is considered to be “all natural” when it comes to maple syrup and that the labeling can be used even if it is deceptive.

The next time you reach for the all natural maple syrup, be careful to read the labels! Add maple syrup to the long list of food manufacturers who practice deceptive advertising and marketing campaigns.
