New Contraceptive Gel Looking Good In Trials
Women could soon get the choice between taking contraceptive pills or applying a contraceptive gel for their birth control.
A new gel is currently in its trial stages and early reports indicate it will be a safe alternative to the contraceptive pill. The gel is applied to the skin and delivers the hormones that prevent pregnancy in the same way that the oral pill does.
The difference between the pill and the gel is that women who use the gel will be free from the pill’s side effects which can cause acne outbreaks and weight gain.
It is expected that should the gel, which is being developed by Antares Pharma, continue to perform well in the trials then it won’t be long before it is released to the public.
The gel can be applied to the thighs, the abdomen, arms or shoulders and will leave no marks as it is quickly absorbed into the skin. Another positive that the gel provides is that unlike the pill, the gel will be suitable for women who are breastfeeding.
According to the director of information for the Family Planning Association Natika Halil, a new birth control option is welcome as she estimates that over two million women are not happy with their current contraceptive method…
“Any contraceptive system that increases the choice of methods available to women and helps to prevent unwanted pregnancies is welcome. Our research shows that there are approximately two million women using a contraceptive method that they are unhappy with, so they will benefit from improved choices and options. This product won’t suit everyone and will only be for women comfortable (with) putting it on their skin and having their contraceptive cover that way.”
What do you think, do you see any potential downsides to using the new gel?
