28 Days Later director Danny Boyle has been talking about his upcoming film 127 Hours which charts the real-life harrowing experience of climber Aron Ralston who famously had to cut off his own arm after a climbing accident.

In the movie, Ralston is played by Spider-Man star James Franco. The Oscar winning director revealed that when he was prepping Franco for the role, he wanted the actor to tap into the pain that women experience when giving birth…

“There is an extraordinary, very profound and deep sense of euphoria in getting out of there. Life being given back again. James’s acting of that pain, that process he goes through – not just in the arm-cutting scene – the whole thing, it is an extraordinary empathetic thing that takes you to a place that you do feel very vulnerable in. I’ve had three kids and I’ve been there for each of [the births] and the first one was an extraordinary thing that I’ll never forget. I tried to talk to James about the way women go through a plateau of pain way beyond anything guys will ever feel, so we tried to get into that territory. It is very disturbing, but also worth so much more than the suffering that’s involved. We always wanted the end of the journey to feel like a passageway to something that was much great than what was left behind.”

127 Hours is due to open in the UK on January 7th.

This sounds like a pretty gruesome movie both visually and mentally. Hopefully I will never be in a position where I am able to relate to Ralston’s experience. Ashamedly I am going to watch 127 Hours for that arm-cutting scene, just to see how Boyle handles it is enough to get my interest.
