Gran Turismo 5 Was It Worth The Wait?
Finally, after five years of waiting Sony have released Gran Turismo 5 for the Playstation 3.
So, the question that everybody is asking is was the five year wait worth it? Have developer Polyphony used that five years to create the perfect driving game?
Well, total disclosure time here, I haven’t played it yet, I’ve been waiting for all the major outlets to review it before I hand over my hard earned for it. See, thing is, two or three years ago I would have camped out on day one regardless of whether or not GT5 had been reviewed but see, I’ve kind of fallen for another racing game since GT4.
In the five years that have passed since Grant Turismo 5 Microsoft have released THREE Forza games. Yep, THREE!
In many ways, the Forza trilogy, in my opinion, is superior to the first four Gran Turismo games so I have been very interested to see what Sony and Polyphony have been up to these last five years.
Anyway, for this post I have decided to just pick out three reviews from outlets that I trust the most.
Up first we’ll take a look at IGN.com, one of the two biggest video game websites in the world. Their reviewer Martin Robinson’s review is pretty interesting, he praises Polyphony for their obsession with regards to their attention to the little details while he takes a pop at the overall feeling of sloppiness. Here’s my favourite line from his review….
“Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game.”
The general consensus with regards to Gran Turismo 5 seems to be that it’s more of a simulation than an actual game. Indeed, Randy Neslon from Joystiq.com pretty much says so in his review…
“GT5 is like walking in on a group of physicists discussing string theory and asking who wants to go toss around a ball for a bit. You’re looking to have fun; they’re only interested in studying the math behind how it bounces.”
While Eurogamer.net reviewer Oli Welsh seemed to be able to look past the apparent overly-simulated feel and found himself enjoying his time with GT5…
“It’s good that Gran Turismo’s been away so long, because it’s all the better to have it back.”
So, what am I going to do? Am I going to pick it up this weekend?
No. But it’s on my Christmas list.
