The Video Game Of The Year Awards Are In

This is the time of year when as a gamer, I get pretty excited.

The end of year awards dished out by the various video game websites always, ALWAYS, brings out the geek in me as I scour the Internet looking for opinions that are close to mine. So, before we go and visit all the major video game outlets and see what they thought were the best games of 2010, I’m going to give you my GOTY list.

I’m going to break the GOTY list down into platforms. Up first…

Xbox 360

Exclusives-wise, it’s been a pretty quiet year for the Xbox 360 but even if 2010 was packed with exclusives I think there was only ever going to be one winner this year…

Mass Effect 2.

Mass Effect 2 is exactly what you want out of a sequel, bigger, better and, dammit, I’ve run out of b-words…

You get the point.

Playstation 3

Before the year started, as I perused the release schedule for the year ahead I would have placed considerable sums of money on Heavy Rain being my GOTY come the years’ end as everything I saw about the game made me dribble like, well, something that dribbles a lot. After playing it however, I was left with a sour taste in my mouth as it turned out to be one of the worst “games” I have played this generation. So, that disappointment aside, what was my favourite Playstation 3 game of the year?

Easy.

God of War 3.

Some people say that GOW 3 is inferior to GOW 2 but as I never played any of the other God of War games I suppose I have to keep my mouth shut on that one. All I know is that God of War 3 was perhaps the best game I’ve played this year on ANY platform.

Wii

This one’s easy and also a bit depressing…

Super Mario Galaxy 2.

I was hoping that Metroid: Other M would top this list before the year started but something went wrong with that game, Team Ninja, in my opinion, delivered a turkey while my other hope for the year, Donkey Kong Returns was just too damned hard.

So that leaves us with Super Mario Galaxy 2 which, while awesome, kind of suggests that if Miyamoto isn’t directly involved with a game that has caught your eye for the Wii, then there’s no point buying it.

So, that’s my opinions out of the way, what did the big boys think?

Ahem, well, this is a bit embarrassing. After a quick visit to all the biggies I have found that only Gamespot have published their game of the year awards so, um, forget the opening paragraph to this post, I’m obviously a bit early on this one.

Still, I may as well just tell you what they picked and hit PUBLISH.

Maybe I’ll update this post as the other sites publish their lists? Let me know.

GAMESPOT

Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 GOTY awards went to Red Dead Redemption. Seriously?

While their Wii award went to Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Right, as I’ve kind of ballsed this article up somewhat by being a bit too early I felt that I owed you guys something so I scoured Youtube for some Game of the Year videos and stumbled upon The 20 Biggest Video Game Disappointments of 2010.

There ‘s only two parts up at the moment, with the final part promised for New Years Day but what is there are parts 1 and 2 which cover the most disappointing games from numbers 20-16 and 15-11 but, be warned, they’ve already both wound me up. Check them out…
