Dead Space 2 The Movie/Game Review

Yesterday I promised to complete my review of Dead Space 2, and here it is. Completing the game proved to be a bit of a hassle as my PS3 took a dump and I had to trek to a friends house to finish the game. As it turned out, it was sort of a good thing that I had to play this game the first time through with someone else’s system. I had two other sets of eyes behind me on the couch viewing the whole game from start to finish, manned with popcorn and drinks.

After I completed the game, we talked about their experience of watching me play the game and what they got out of the experience. They both concurred that it was like watching an interactive horror movie and felt vested in the outcome as their friend was in the movie, so they both felt a connection. For me, it was a bit distracting with the peanut gallery in the background, yelling and screaming watch out and OMG’s every time an attack took place, but overall it was quite fun to have onlookers cheer me on when things went right. Overall it was quite fun to have onlookers watching me play, despite the distractions.

The game is done real well, and I can understand why it was some 3 years in the making. Dead Space 2 is an interactive horror movie from start to finish with little backtracking. The detail in the game is well done and a first play through is like eating sorbet between courses at dinner to cleanse your gaming pallet. There is so much to absorb from a visual standpoint and I did not get to see what the popcorn eaters behind me got to view. The things that they pointed out after the game was complete, I completely missed.

Lighting effects, bone chilling music and special effects add to the drama as you work your way through the game. Some new weapons and the capability to upgrade and modify them is cool, somewhat like Fallout. I wish their were more weapons in the game as you move forward, but that fact did not take anything away from the game for me.

The game is challenging and unlike the cat, you only have 3 lives. Ammo can be sparse at times and during attacks your health can dwindle to practically nothing.  In conclusion, I highly recommend Dead Space 2, and suggest that you play the game with friends watching as it will be entertaining for all, players and viewers alike. This horror flick/video game is not for the faint of heart. I am off to play the game in the background as an onlooker rather than manning the controller, to see what I missed.

Visceral Games and Dead Space 2 gets props from me with their new release and I highly recommend this game to all those that like this genre.
