The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim / Why All The Hype?
You are probably wondering why so much attention is being paid to the sequel to Oblivion at this stage of the game. The new release is not scheduled till November 11, 2011. From my point of view, I am a big fan of the game as I put countless hours in Oblivion. As a matter of fact, I put more hours in this game than any other single player game in my long history of gaming. If you have played Oblivion, then the excitement of playing the next installment in this series is understood. If you have not, either pick up a copy or play the next installment as I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
The main reason for a long and extended time invested were the possibilities for play in the game itself. There were numerous quests to perform, yet the first month with my first character, I never went on one quest as I chose to wonder about aimlessly in search of better weapons, armor and cash, fighting whatever came along that stood in the way of my chosen path. Though I did not know it at the time, my non objective approach in the game had its pitfalls as killing off certain people in the game destroyed my successful completion of quests later on.
Every move in the game had a ripple effect on the overall outcome of the current game in progress and took on a life of its own as you progressed into game play, which made this game unlike no other that I had ever played to this magnitude. Every action in the game could have had serious consequences as to the overall end result of quests. The cool part of this learning experience was you could start over from early game saves or create a new character from the same or different character classes and take a new approach to the game.
The word is that numerous improvements have been made when it comes to menus and access to weapons, scrolls, spells and armor and user friendly access makes for much more enjoyable game play. Other notes of interest is that fighting techniques have changed drastically and the lack of defensive moves could prove fatal in battle. Graphics in battle scenes have been drastically improved to create more realism and eye candy to the players enjoyment. No one game maker does it better than Bethesda and I can not wait for a glimpse into their new take on this series.
I am looking forward to the friendlier user interface that Bethesda is promising and any improvement to game play made by same can only improve one of the best series to ever come in contact with gaming platforms in this genre. If you remember Oblivion was the first successful cross over from PC gaming to PS3 and Xbox platforms.
Will keep you up to date as I learn me about Elder Scrolls V, and like yourself cannot get enough info on the new release. November seems like a long way off, but I am sure that the wait will be well worth it, and previews into the release only get me more excited. Platforms for the game will be PC, PS3 and Xbox.

I’m definitely excited about Skyrim, although I agree with Ryan in that I hope it will be a bit more Morrowind-like than Oblivion. I loved Oblivion, (racked up over 1000 hours!) but Morrowind had a lot of things that I liked more so. Especially the enchanting which I felt was wasted on Oblivion with the limitations it put on you. I have the XBOX version of Morrowind, but I bought the PC version of the game last year, and barely touched Oblivion since. (Although I had mostly done everything.)
Morrowind’s throwing weapons were cool too, but I think you should be able to lob your whole sword at someone and then go and retrieve it.
The transport in Morrowind was a big thing for me also. Yes fast travel in Oblivion saved time in reality, but in the game time it didn’t.
So if Skyrim does address some of these things and brings back the goodies left out of Oblivion, then I think I will be that much more excited.
this really isn’t a predecessor to oblivion…
but i am excited for this
Ryan I agree with you 100% Morrowind and Oblivion two of my favorite all time games but there was so much more you could do in the Morrowind.
I have been waiting for the next Elder Scrolls game to come out litterally since I stopped playing Oblivion. I’m really looking forward to the new story and world and the two-handed combat really caught my eye (I love my Mage). I wish November 11th was tomorrow so I can get my hands on what looks to be an absolute gem of a game
I can’t wait for this game. While I played Oblivion for hundreds of hours, I played Morrowind that much more. There was so much more to do, and you literally had to travel everywhere your self. Not having fast travel is a pain in the ass, but it’s so much more rewarding when you progress. It was also possible for key characters to be killed off as well, which made it more interesting. Painful at times though. My first playthrough I slaughtered an entire village, fought off the guards and finally got away. When I finally started to take the game seriously, I came to the village (bodies everywhere, this was 50 hours or so later) I realized what I had done. It hampered any more progress, and therefore I had to start over.
I hope Skyrim is more like Morrowind, though I doubt it will be. I understand why, the way gaming is going now, people expect to have their hands held the whole way through.
Anyway, there’s my two cents
It’s coming out in november is it not?
Yes Mark it is and that was a mistake. Thanks for the heads up.
