George Lucas Talks Stormtrooper Battle To The Supreme Court
Star Wars creator George Lucas’s long-running battle with the manufacturer of replica Stormtrooper costumes has now made it all the way to the UK Supreme Court.
Lucas has long been miffed that UK prop designer Andrew Ainsworth, the dude who actually built the original Stormtrooper costumes for the first Star Wars movie, has been selling replicas to the public as he feels that he alone owns the copyright to the design and Ainsworth has no rights whatsoever to sell the replica suits.
Ainsworth began selling the replica Stormtrooper outfits back in 2004 and Lucas successfully sued him for twenty million dollars.
After the lawsuit, Ainsworth stopped selling the outfits in the US but instead of walking away from selling them altogether, he simply started selling them in the UK instead.
Lucas and his legal team went after him in the UK but their case was thrown out of court in 2008.
The ruling was that British copyright laws did not cover costumes which meant that in the UK at least, Lucas didn’t have a case.
Lucas was unsuccessful again when he tried it on in 2009.
So now, the supreme court awaits round 4.
