GK Films have announced that the planned reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise will be released in 2013. GK Films, who are owned by Oscar winning Departed producer Graham King, acquired the movie rights to the legendary video game franchise from publisher Square Enix.

It is thought that the Tomb Raider reboot will focus on the origins of franchise protagonist Lara Croft and co-producer Tim Headington revealed…

“We are very excited to be rebooting what is already a hugely successful film franchise and continuing the Tomb Raider phenomenon,”

There have been two Tomb Raider movies and both starred Hollywood A-Lister Angelina Jolie as the British explorer. The first Tomb Raider movie was released back in 2001 while the sequel; Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life released two years later.

Combined, both movies took a respectable 430 million dollars at the worldwide box office.

On the video game front, Square Enix announced last year that Tomb Raider will be getting a video game reboot as well.
