The UKBA, the United Kingdom Border Agency are praising the writers of the long-running UK soap opera; Coronation Street for highlighting the issue of sham marriages in a new storyline which sees Coronation Street newcomer Xin Chiang, played by Elizabeth Tan marry character Graeme Proctor in a bid to stay in the UK once her student visa expires.

According to the Manchester Evening News, UKBA bosses worked closely with Coronation Street writers when the plotline was being created.

Eddy Montgomery, a regional director for the UKBA said…

“We are pleased to see the profile of our work raised and to see this sort of storyline being featured in the media.

We have been really happy to work closely with Granada on this, as we have seen this cynical crime in action in the region.”

It is unclear at the moment whether or not Graeme and Xin will be prosecuted or get away with their dastardly plan as the storyline will unfold over the next couple of weeks.
