Ben Affleck Says Congo Is On The Brink
Daredevil star Benn Affleck has urged US lawmakers to give more money to the Democratic Republic of Congo or run the risk of facing a possible humanitarian crisis.
Affleck revealed that he has just recently come back from the Congo. Affleck testified before the Human Rights subcommittee earlier in the week and warned them that the Congolese public could be in danger if safe and legitimate elections do not take place this year…
“Having just returned from the Congo last month I can assure you that Congo is on the brink.
Since my first visit in 2006, I have witnessed efforts to improve governance, promote economic growth, and reduce conflict. Unfortunately, despite some positive movement, the record over the last five years is not promising.”
He then added that he wants the Congolese to share the same basic freedoms that US citizens enjoy…
“We believe in being free from the tyranny of violence. We believe in life and liberty. We believe that basic human rights are not just important… but [they are] a fundamental right to be demanded for all mankind.
These ideas make us who we are. They make us great. If our foreign policy does not reflect these ideals, it completely undermines them.”
