Welcome to the new weekly Playstation 3 column here on Nerdles.com courtesy of SuperVideoGamer.com

Rather than share with you any of my background, I’m just going to dive in and get started with a round-up of last weeks news for the third bestselling video game console in the world. Before you throw up some comments giving me crap for busting that stat, it is true, somehow Sony have found themselves in third place this generation and however unjust that may seem to both you and me, it is in fact true.

Anyway, let’s get straight to last week’s news shall we?

Batman Arkham Asylum Release Date Confirmed

Warner Bros has announced that the sequel to 2009′s awesome Batman: Arkham Asylum, this time called Arkham City, will be released for the Playstation 3 (and Xbox 360 btw) on October 18th.

Last Guardian To Push PS3 To Its Limits

In an interview with Edge magazine, Last Guardian creative director Fumito Ueda said that the highly anticipated game would push the Playstation 3 to its limits…

“With Ico, the way the AI was implemented was a challenge, and in SOTC, the way you could climb those bosses was another. In this game, I’m implementing both together while applying a huge brush-up that pushes the PS3 to its limit. This is quite a task, and we still have a lot of work to perfect it.”

Every year some game developer says that their game pushes the PS3 to its limits, personally I think the PS3 is a deceptive beast and that no one has yet found its limits but then you probably think I’m biased because this is Playstation 3 column. Well, I’m not. The PS3 is legendarily difficult to develop for which leads me to believe that of all the current-gen consoles, the PS3 is the one likely to keep surprising us.

The PS3 About To Get A Price Cut?

SCEE UK boss Ray Maguire has suggested that the Playstation 3 could be about to get a price-cut in the near future. In an interview with the Official Playstation Magazine, Maguire revealed that the current high price-point for the PS3 is necessary because of the high development costs but with Sony managing to lower the cost of manufacturing, those savings could be passed on to the consumer…

“It’s been a challenge for us to get the costs down over the years. The retail price has been more than we would have liked… Hopefully the price might still come down.”

They’d better hurry up because the noise my PS3 fat makes every time I play a game suggests that I’m going to be in market soon for a brand new PS3 slim.

Playstation Move Getting Hammered By Kinect

Video game analyst Michael Pachter revealed that the Playstation Move is getting outsold by a crazy 5 to 1 by Microsoft’s Kinect. In a note to investors Pachter said…

“Under one-fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony’s Move controller, suggesting another modest month. Over 2/3 of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral, as Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles again outsold PS3 Move console bundles by over 5:1. We note that the top selling Kinect software titles easily outsold their Move counterparts.”

Now, although the above quote doesn’t mean that Move is getting trumped by the Kinect on a device to device basis, it does mean that Kinect is shifting consoles while Move isn’t, which in my head means that the Xbox 360 is going to pull away from the PS3 and get closer to the Wii in lifetime sales throughout 2011.

Right, with news out of the way, let’s focus on the games that are due to be released this week shall we?

(All games will be released by the 18th.)

Yakuza 4

Basically, Yakuza 4 is very much like all the other instalments in the Japanese free-roaming franchise. It’s a Japanese RPG beat em-up with Grand Theft Auto elements.

This time around you get to play as four different characters which means that you’re going to have to level up four times which sounds to me like it could end up becoming something of a chore.

Motorstorm Apocalypse

It’s the fourth game in the Motorstorm franchise so you should know what to expect here. Motorstorm Apocalypse is the first title in the franchise to use urban settings . So, where does the Apocalypse subtitle come from? Well, the races take place in a location that is taking a bit of a hammering from natural disasters.

Moto GP 10/11

In Motor GP 10/11 you will be able to participate in last year’s Motor GP full with licenses and likenesses plus Capcom have promised a free 2011 update as soon as the season starts. Other than that, this is more Moto GP.

There will be a career mode plus a split-screen local co-op mode so you and a mate can skid around corners in the comfort of your living room.

Homefront

If you’re looking for a Call Of Duty fix then you should probably check out Homefront. Set in the future you are propelled into an America where North Korea has decided to move in and take over. Expect plenty of fire-fighting in backyards and a gripping storyline. It was written by the dude who gave us Red Dawn back in the 80’s and Homefront deals with the same kind of themes except this time, instead of the Soviets, it’s the North Koreans turning up on American soil uninvited.

Warriors Legend of Troy

If you liked the Dynasty Warriors franchise then you will be right at home with Warriors: Legend of Troy as it has been built on the same game engine but instead of feudal Japan, the backdrop is ancient Greece where you can take charge of either the Greeks or the Trojans.

Dance on Broadway

Playstation Move compatible, Dance of Broadway allows you to dance like an idiot to your favourite show tunes in the comfort of your own living room. It features 25 classic songs and 20 choreographed routines from some of the biggest Broadway musicals ever.

Expect songs from…

  • Little Shop of Horrors
  • Rent
  • Fame
  • Hair Spray
  • Rocky Horror Show
  • Hair

Nothing much else to say about Dance on Broadway save for you know right now if you’re going to like it. Me? No thanks.

Monster Jam: Path of Destruction

The follow-up to 2008’s Monster Jam: Urban Assault, expect Path of Destruction to offer more Monster truck racing and crazy stunts.

A track editor will be included but don’t expect the level of creative freedom offered by the likes of Mod Nation racers.

Top Spin 4

What’s there to say about Top Spin 4 that you don’t already know?

Not much. It’s got famous tennis players, new move sets and, well, that’s pretty much tennis right there isn’t it? Personally I have always preferred the Virtua Tennis series over the Top Spin games.

And that’s it for this week folks. See you again next Monday.

I must say I admire your non-fanboy spiel, and straight forward attitude. This is a breath of fresh air! As an owner of both ps3 and xbox, I find too often that “console bias” often taints reviews and articles, and skews reader opinion, for better or worse. Kudos man. Keep up the good work! Oh, and “Dance on Broadway” game? Really? I guess the “jazz hands” demographic will eat that up. They know who they are…it certainly isn’t me!

    • Griff says:

Thanks for your comment. Now, I wonder if you can guess what movie this quote is from…
“There’s no limit to what he can do. He could destroy the earth… If anything should happen to me you must go to Gort, you must say these words, ‘Klaatu barada nikto’, please repeat that.”
      Um, any guesses?
Those Jazz Hands buggers are going to love Dance on Broadway aren’t they? That is so depressing.

  2. Humbolt says:

Ok, the Move is NOT getting hammered by the Kinect..As far as number, maybe..but it is by far a better device than the Kinect.

    • Griff says:

I’m not sold on either device to be honest. Having played both over the holidays I must admit that I was more impressed with the Move but that could be because I had low expectations whereas the Kinect, such was my excitement, could only ever disappoint me. Personally, I have no interest in these motion devices. Call me old fashioned but I like using my thumbs when I play games. If all we used were wands and cameras to play games, what would be the point in having thumbs any more? I don’t use them for anything else. (Hitch-hiking has become way too dangerous these days…)
