Xbox 360 Week In Review – Another Video Game Column
Hello and welcome to my Xbox 360 video game column here on Nerdles.com courtesy of www.SuperVideoGamer.com.
Every Wednesday I’ll be taking out my glass eye and pointing it at the Xbox 360. For my first week I’m going to keep it simple; I’ll skim across the news and then look ahead to this week’s new video game releases. So, rather than waffle on here, let’s get straight to it shall we?
In the news…
Limbo, Trials HD And Splosion Man Going Retail
Microsoft announced that Limbo, Trials HD and Splosion Man will be bundled together and thrown out onto retail shelves as part of an Xbox Live hits compilation. Surprisingly, if you pick the compilation up at your local video game retailer it will cost you 30 bucks which is actually 10 bucks cheaper than if you download them separately from the Xbox Live Marketplace. It doesn’t make sense that a real, physical version should be cheaper than a digital copy does it?
Doodle Jump Jumping Onto Kinect
The hit iPhone game, the ten million selling Doodle Jump, is in development for the Kinect. Developer Lima Sky revealed that one of the most popular games on the App Store is getting an Xbox 360 Kinect port though they didn’t share any dates with us.
Not sure Doodle Jump is a good fit for Kinect but I suppose Lima Sky know what they are doing.
Kinect Xbox 360 Packages Outselling PS3 Move Bundles By 5 to 1
According to Michael Pachter and his anal chums (anal = analysts btw), Microsoft’s’ Kinect is helping the Xbox 360 kick the crap out of the Sony PS3. Kinect console bundles are out-selling PS3 Move bundles by 5 to 1. Either way you look at that stat, you’ve got to be impressed. Personally, I don’t want a Kinect or Move but it seems that there’s plenty of you out there who do. (Kinect’s anyway…)
Xbox 360 Pulling Away From Playstation 3
For the second consecutive month, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling video game console in America. Sales of Microsoft’s console are up 27% year on year which means the distance between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is getting longer while the Nintendo Wii is beginning to look over its shoulder and actually see another console in the far distance.
The console wars are back on baby and the 360 is leading the charge. YEAH!!!!! (Actually I don’t really care. Just thought a big YEAH!!! would keep the fanboys happy…)
Kinect Shifts 10 Million Units
Microsoft have announced that they have shipped 10 million Kinect’s to retailers around the world. Kinect has shifted 10 million units in its first three months which according to Microsoft and Guinness (the world record nerds), makes the Kinect the fastest selling consumer electronics device EVER!
During its first three months at retail, Microsoft shipped 133,333 Kinects per day.
By my calculations, that’s a lot.
Okay, now that we’ve got the news out of the way. How’s about taking a look at this weekend’s new releases…
Moto GP 10/11
If you like motorbike games then you’re probably going to want to take a peek at this. Although when you get it home you will only be able to participate in last year’s Moto GP, Capcom have promised that when the 2011 season kicks off, they will update the roster and stuff to reflect the new season.
Instead of Moto GP, wouldn’t you rather a Street Hawk game? I would. Let’s all bombard Capcom with emails to tell them to stop wasting their time with yearly simulations and give us a Street Hawk game.
Homefront
To be honest, a couple of days ago I was pretty excited about Homefront but that was before the reviews started trickling in. At this moment in time, Homefront owns a paltry 72 average on Metacritic which kind of means that’s it probably not worth buying. Rent it but don’t buy it.
Besides, if you only like single-player games, the campaign will only last about five hours which is pretty poor in my book. Crappy actually.
Still, it was written by the same guy who wrote Red Dawn so at least those five hours should be fun. Instead of buying it, I’m just going to add it to my ILoveFilm list.
Alien Breed Trilogy
I love these old-school top down shooters. As the title says, all three Alien Breed games will be on the disc. Previously available only on download, they are finally going to get a box of their own and be allowed to sit proudly on a retail shelf.
Definitely worth picking up and now that I’m not buying Homefront this weekend, I’ll think I’ll buy a copy for myself.
Top Spin 4
Urgh, tennis sims, I don’t like ‘em. Top Spin 4 has all the features you would expect, it has famous faces, authentic move-sets and, well, it’s tennis and tennis is boring these days. I miss wooden rackets and players who tuck their shirts into their embarrassingly high shorts. Oh, and female armpit hair, I miss that too.
Interesting fact – Tennis was invented by Wimbledon-based strawberry farmers.

I got to agree with Griff. As a gamer I can give you a review on Homefront and I wouldn’t give it any more than 2 ’cause it’s pooh. If my boss can finish it or any game on the hardest setting the game is rubbish and not worth the time of day.
I strongly urge you to reconsider how you spread news and reviews of a game. Homefront is a breath of fresh air to a genre muddled with generic copies of past successes with rarely anything done to be innovative or cater to the community. I am just a mere gamer but I can tell you that Kaos is not being reviewed fairly and not a single review I have read has anything genuinely bad to say about it. If you read reviews of high ranked games in a series they are not earning the same comments or praise as homefront but are getting high scores based on popularity to get views. Much how a B movie uses an A list actor to get a better following. Play games before you jump on the review bandwagon because they can be as tainted as your view is currently.
You know what, I agree totally with your point. Though in my defence I didn’t make any claim about the game, I just relayed information that is already available. But you’re right, all the reviews are low and yet no one is saying anything bad about the game. The reason I will hold off on buying it is due to the game’s length. 40 quid for 5 hours doesn’t represent good value in my opinion but you are right in what you say, I did approach my piece with a tainted view and I should know better than that.
But back to the reviews, you know what, I read more negatives in the COD Black Ops and Halo Reach reviews than I did for Homefront yet those games bagged loads of 9′s and 8.5′s while Homefront averages in the 7′s. It doesn’t make sense.. It is kind of like it is getting punished for being good. It’s like the reviewers were expecting it to be innovative or ground-breaking and then punished it for not living up to their expectations, like you said, tainted views.
