Mr. Popper’s Penguins Review: Jim Carrey Is Still A Comedic Genius
Mr. Popper’s Penguins is an enjoyable movie that showcases Jim Carrey’s comedic genius and shows the world he still can make us laugh. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is supposed to be one of those feel good movies where a father, who gets a bunch of penguins as an inheritance, finds a way to bond his family together. While there are several moments in Mr. Popper’s Penguins that will try to lull you to sleep, Jim Carrey will bring you back from your daydreams with some of his patented antics that make him one of the great comedians of our time. I have always loved Carrey’s comic endeavors and only wished this movie showcased them more. As far as this being a family movie goes, there is a bit of humor not suited for children. From a child’s perspective, this movie bored my 6 year old to death. There just wasn’t enough comedic action to keep him entertained. I thought is was a well rounded movie but it could have been so much better. Mr. Popper’s Penguins suffers from a sort of identity crisis as it doesn’t quite know whether it wants to be a comedy or a full on family movie and it ends up failing at both. I think Mr. Popper’s Penguins would have made a great family move or a great comedy, but it tried too hard to mix the two together and ends of mediocre. Jim Carrey is a comedic genius and a great actor in a serious role. Carrey just needs to do one or the other and not both at the same time. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is an OK movie that will not keep your young kids entertained.
