Firefox 6 Review: Nice Updates And Speed

Firefox 6 is going to roll out on Tuesday and we have done some preliminary testing and the results are pretty good. First, we tested the Linux and Windows versions against the older versions. Firefox for Linux is definitely faster as we ran tests on page loads, subsequent page loads, and image pulls using the same site as a test bed. With over 3,000 loads on the older version 5 we saw a 15% increase in speed across the board using Firefox 6. Windows users will have a little improvement as we did the same test under Windows 7 and it averaged a 6% increase. Not as good as the Linux version but speed is speed. Now Firefox 6 started up in 13% less time on Linux over the older version. Our Firefox 6 loaded an incredibly faster 19% on Window 7 verses the older platform. the browser bar has been redesigned and it is easier to tell what site you are on. The plugin management area is new also but we haven’t played with that yet and will update later. the new permissions area is very sweet and give you a lot more control over who knows what about you. Security is always a good thing and this makes it easy. then new add ons area is much slicker and easier to navigate. Firefox 6 uses about 8% less resources than the older version so it doesn’t bog down you pc as much. Firefox 6 handles zoom better and looks a lot cleaner when you zoom in on a page. We couldn’t get an exact figure here but you can see the difference. People with bad vision like me will love this feature even more now. So go to Mozilla on Tuesday and be sure to upgrade to Firefox 6. You and your PC will be happy.

Maybe they increased the speed, but Firefox is still the slowest browser on my system. I hate to say it (and I never thought I would), but Microsoft’s IE9 is a superior product. So is Opera, for that matter.

Firefox 6 indeed is faster than version 5. But what I have been noticing is that every time a new version of Firefox comes out it is faster than the previous version and after a few weeks some how it becomes slower.

You can go to ZDNet and download this now. If you want to try it before everybody else gets it.

if you want to try it before everybody else gets it, why not just use the beta channel? or even the aurora channel. I’ve used aurora since 6.0a2 and never had any problems with instability :)

You are so lucky. I am tired with these updates. they just bring me new bugs and incompatibility. I use Avant browser and chrome more and more since firefox update itself to 4. Maybe the next time is when I change to other browsers. I love firefox but not the continuously updated version numbers.
