Conan The Barbarian Review: WOW! Finally A Great Sequel!
Conan the Barbarian is a movie I was waiting to see as I am a big fan of the original. I was ready with my “critic” hat on because I figured this would be just another Hollywood remake. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This new Conan takes us on a little darker path. Of course, Conan still sees his family slaughtered but instead of going out for just revenge, this new Conan is not just a slave who has no master. The new Conan goes off on an adventure that includes a little “lawlessness”. Conan is shot in sensational 3D that gives us all we want of flying body parts and “blood and guts”. The best scenes in this film are the ones where “little” Conan goes out in the woods and fights. Chopping off heads to bring back as trophies for his father. It’s macabre and fantastic at the same time.
Now the new Conan, played by Jason Momoa, is just as ripped as “the Governator” was in the original movie. Momoa is definitely a better actor and provides us with a much better performance. You can see his charm oozing through the screen. His lines are much more believable and Jason has brought a sense of realism to Conan that Arnold just couldn’t get across. Now another standout in this movie is Marique, played by Rose McGowan, and she is the perfect mythical villain. Rose has never been shy about pushing the envelope with wardrobe and she gives it her all in this film. There are very few actresses in Hollywood that I would love to see with a shaved head and fake metal claws. Rose McGowan looks and acts like it is natural to her. She has a few neat tricks for Conan also as her “demons” that she conjures up to fight Conan made me jump back when they came crashing out of the ground. One other note is that it sounded a lot like Morgan Freeman doing the voice overs, although I didn’t see him in the credits.
Conan the Barbarian in 3D is a great action film. It has a lot more humorous moments than the original. The 3d effects are superb and the story was well played with the addition of the “young Conan” background. If you like actions movies you will love this film. It is one sequel that does the original justice while adding a new sense of “flair” to the storyline. I would highly recommend Conan the Barbarian 3D.
