Galaxy Tab 7.7 Review: Why Can’t The US Have One?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7
UPDATE: After getting a response from a reader. I did a little digging and found that the unit displayed at the left and the unit I tested was not the new Galaxy Tab 7.7 but was the old Galaxy Tab 7 which does not have the AMOLED display. It does show how there are shysters out there that will claim a lot of things. This unit is prominently displayed in a lot of stores in the Philippines as the Galaxy Tab 7.7 with the new specs. Now I love gadgets and when I saw this I wanted to review it. The review below is real and the unit functioned just like I described but it is NOT a new Galaxy Tab 7.7. It evidently had the old 1 GHz processor and not the new one. I want to thank one of my readers for pointing this out. Also, if you are like me and not REALLY familiar with the latest gadgets, be wary of buying them in countries known for selling fake products. I learned a good lesson here. thanks.
Samsung has made waves and stirred up Apple with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but don’t look for the sweet Galaxy Tab 7.7 anytime soon in the US. Samsung reps told us there are no immediate plans to release the 7.7 Galaxy Tab to the US market. We wanted to know why. They wouldn’t say. So, while traveling in SE Asia this past month, we got to see the 7.7 Galaxy Tab and had to take it for a little test drive. The first thing I wanted to test was the phone. While it would be too big to hold all the time, a small backpack and a nice bluetooth headset makes this unit practical. Our test unit, borrowed from a store employee, worked fine and connected through HSPA and had built in GPS. Texting on the keyboard was easy and and keeping the unit in the backpack while walking around the mall was ideal. Now, we wanted to see this mini Tablet in action.
The biggest plus of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the screen. This small screen is crisp and clear with a resolution of 1280X800. Samsung calls it a “super AMOLED display” and to say it is “great” would be an understatement. Movies and video play with a clarity you won’t find on an iPad. Internet loaded fast for the area and I like the mini SD card slot.
This unit is thinner than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and is very light. It has a 3 MP camera on the front and a 2 MP cam facing you. Both work great for what they are and video looks respectable. There is also an LED Flash for the front camera and it works well for those low light situations. The pic of the Galaxy Tab at the top of this article was taken with our demo unit. The demo unit had TouchWiz already installed and it does add a few options but still far behind Apple. The store manager, Edward, said he has to recharge his unit about once every two days and that he doesn’t keep it on all the time. We used it constantly for about 4 hours and still had plenty of battery left. Our unit was the 16 GB model with a 1.4 GHZ dual core processor and 1 gig of RAM. It used Android 3.2 and came with TouchWiz pre-installed. The official weight is listed at just 11 ounces and it feels very light. Our only question was can we take it to the US and we couldn’t get a definitive answer. Price wasn’t bad at $484 US dollars. Now let’s go petition Samsung to bring this unit to the US.

Hey bbwhirl!
Thank you for the update!
I´ve really hoped that I was wrong and just the photo was interchanged and that there could be a country which has already some galaxy tab 7.7 units + no taxes. But in the end we have to wait some months for the new one, probably till 2012. Due to the gigantic AMOLED Display, the price will be high for sure. I wouldn´t wonder if it could reach 900 US-$. But there should be enough people which will be willing to pay this price cause this display is just a dream.
Bye,
Simon
@Simon,
Thanks for replying again, I accidentally deleted the first comment, sorry. I am glad you brought this to my attention. I like to be accurate in my site. I am REALLY glad I didn’t buy one also…lol! I played with the 5 inch galaxy also. I will put up my review of it soon but am just checking to make sure that one was real. they said the Phils is bad for fake stuff and I guess this proves the point pretty well.
