Amazon is betting its $199 dollar Kindle Fire will be a hit with consumers who want a cheap tablet and they are getting help from DC Entertainment. In a press release yesterday, DC stated they are making over 100 graphic novels like Watchmen, All Star Superman, and Batman and Son available exclusively to owners of the Kindle Fire (SEE BELOW FOR COMPLETE LIST OF TITLES). Russ Grandinetti, Vice President, Kindle Content stated, “We’re excited that DC Entertainment has made 100 of their graphic novels available for customers to read exclusively on our just-announced Kindle Fire. Some of these graphic novels, including ‘Watchmen,’ the bestselling — and considered by many to be the greatest — graphic novel of all time, have never been available before in digital format, and we think customers will love them.” This partnership is clearly intended to get Nerds and others to go with the Kindle Fire over other tablets like the iPad.
In other news, rumors are swirling that Amazon is looking hard at purchasing WebOS from HP. Wirelessandmobilenews.com is hinting that Amazon could be trying to grab up WebOS in an attempt to gain a broader market share. This would be a big help to all the people who own a WebOS device and also give Amazon a broader customer base. Amazon has taken its cue from HP with pricing and has eliminated Google from the picture with the Kindle Fire. Even though the tablet uses Android, you cannot get apps from Google but have to buy them direct from Amazon. Pricing of the new tablet is a direct result of the huge rush created by HP last month with its $99 dollar fire sale of the HP Touchpad. By getting exclusive deals like the one from DC Entertainment and forcing users to buy apps direct from Amazon, they can afford to lose money selling the tablet and make it back when the user buys something. It’s a gamble, but it may pay off big.
