UPDATE 10/13: finally got the upgrade to go through after a grueling process of resetting my iPad 2. It took two tries, but finally it is working now. Reports on the web are confirming that Apple’s servers are overwhelmed. I would suggest waiting a day or two, until the fever dies down a bit, before upgrading to iOS 5. Especially if you are not that technically inclined.

Seems Apple is having a lot of problems with users upgrading to the iOS 5 and the forums are full of posts from unhappy iPhone and iPad owners. Apple has given no direct response to us as of 8pm eastern time and we couldn’t get it if they tried since my iPad 2 is locked up like a brick. Many people are posting success after multiple tries and many others are voicing their anger on the iTunes forums. We have tried to upgrade for over 4 hours now with no success. Our iPad 2 just starts to boot up and then shuts down. If you haven’t tried to upgrade yet, you might want to wait a while because it looks like the Apple Servers are overloaded and this is what is causing the problem. This is a big set back for Apple, who has been plagued in the last week with server problems on the pre-order sales of the iPhone 4S, where customers were having problems getting their order to go through. Seems someone dropped the ball here as we have all come to expect Apple to anticipate these things and be ready for them.
