Chalet Girl Review: A Forgettable, but Fun Chick Flick

Chalet Girl Poster
I know what you’re thinking – this is just another predictable romantic comedy where girl meets boy, and they fall in love. Well, you’re absolutely right. Unlike the typical romantic comedy, however, Chalet Girl’s cast, lighthearted humor, and impressive cinematography of snowboarding in the mountains make this film surprisingly real and enjoyable.
Much credit goes to Felicity Jones’ natural charm and like-able onscreen presence, and her supporting co-stars who make this film feel as real as possible and not so Cinderella-esque. Jones’ plays as Kim, a once promising skateboarder who loses her way when her mother dies in a car accident, and chooses instead to watch out for her sweet but depressed father (played by comedian Bill Bailey). Pretty much broke, Kim applies for a job at a haughty ski chalet in the Alps. A simple, down-to-earth type of chic, Kim obviously doesn’t belong, and this is where the movie sticks close to a Cinderella-type story line.
There are no twists or turns to Chalet Girl’s plot. The movie breezily follows the typical rom-com outline, but skips over the unrealistic fluff of what usually passes for romantic comedies at the theater. The entire cast seem like real people that I’d actually like to spend time with, and Felicity Jones is such a sweetheart it’s hard not to like her at all in this film.
There’s a handsome prince, err, son of a big banker Jonny (Ed Westwick, heartthrob of the TV series Gossip Girl) and a sort of evil stepsister, Georgie (Tamsin Egerton). As the movie gets into full swing, Kim rediscovers her natural talent for snowboarding, hoping to win a major competition to win some big prize money. Before she does that though, she has to face her dramatic past. But with a prince like Jonny by her side, we all know it all turns out well for this Cinderella Chalet Girl.
