The Three Musketeers is actually the four musketeers in this Nth Hollywood remake of this Alexander Dumas novel, but that doesn’t make it any better. In fact, “more” may have been just too much for this film that otherwise could have probably fared better with less. (You Tube Trailer Below) The Three Musketeers stars a quad of musketeers – Athos (Matthew Macfayden), Porthos (Ray Stevenson), D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman), and Aramis (Luke Evans). Plot-wise, the film stays faithful to the Dumas novel where the Musketeers are sent to retrieve a diamond necklace that belongs to the French Queen (played by Juno Temple). They unite with the beautiful but crafty Milady de Winter (played by Resident Evil action star Mila Jovovich), and are eventually betrayed by her in an attempt to take over the French throne and bring the whole of Europe to war.
Whereas past Musketeer reiterations relied more on musket and sword-swinging entertainment, the newest rendition makes a grand use of flying galleons and other ancient Germanic contraptions to pump up the action. Produced and directed by Jovovich’s husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, the Three Musketeers also focuses sometimes too heavily on her Milady de Winter character. Admittedly, Jovovich does a better job of exuding her devilishness than her male counterparts, but all her Matrix-like slo-mo imitations and her constant catwalk posing get old quite quickly. As for the Musketeers themselves, they actually make for a fine group of comic gentleman as their banter gets to be really funny. Unfortunately, that all gets overshadowed by all the high-flying fancy gadgetry happening around them.
The Three Musketeers is another one of those movies this year that was shot in 3D. I guess with all the stuff flying around in the film, it makes sense to shoot it in 3D for a bit more depth. Unfortunately, it just fails to make good use of the technology like in Avatar or Alice In Wonderland. It’s a classic example of Hollywood taking something interesting and novel, and using it so much (particularly in this film) that it becomes both a bore (and a chore) on the eyes. The Three Musketeers will be welcomed by 3D action junkies but movie goers who like a well rounded film should go somewhere else for their entertainment.
