In Time Review: Great Acting With A Retro Feel

In Time Official Poster
“In Time” brings on a future that reminds us of the past and Justin Timberlake solidly places himself as a very capable action star. The premise set by Andrew Niccol is simple: Time is the new money in this future. People are born with 25 years to live. Once they turn 25, they are given one year extra and it is up to them to get more “time.” Each person has a time clock embedded into their arm that tells them how much time they have left. This time can be given away or traded for things like food or even taking a bus. Time has become currency in this future.
Just like today, this future has regular people that are literally living from day to day by either working for time or getting it by other less legal means. There are also the wealthy ones, who live in splendor and hoard their time. Of course, this sounds familiar with all the protesting that is going on today, but Niccol doesn’t make a statement here or try to have some grand “theme” behind his movie. He just sets the plot and lets it go on its own.
The story begins with Will Salas, an average guy with one simple dream played by Timberlake, who saves a man that is being robbed of his time. Little did he know that this man wanted to die. The good deed gets rewarded and now Will has enough time to fulfill his biggest dream, to take his mom to New Greenwich, the city where all the wealthy live. Will doesn’t get the chance to do that as his mom dies. He learns that the “people in charge” are manipulating the system to control the population by raising prices. Salas now takes it upon himself to save the world and this is where the action starts.
Will goes on a rampage with Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sylvia. He kidnaps Sylvia but she quickly realizes what she has been missing for all of her sheltered life and becomes his partner. They go off on a journey to right all the wrongs in society. While the action is predictable here, it does provide some great fun for the viewer. There is also a duality presented that shows how easy it is to become what you despise as Will gets really comfortable for a while in his new “rich” lifestyle. The sets are great also. Niccol give us a future where only vintage looking cars exist and it seems that all the gadgets we love today are gone forever. Do you know where your nearest pay phone is? You would in this future because cell phones are non existent.
Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried do a great job in this movie. Some viewers might be disappointed that Niccol didn’t take the plot to deeper levels but this is a good solid SciFi/Action film that will keep you in your seat. In Time is a good film and I would recommend it to any SciFi fan that likes a movie to have a lot of action without being bogged down in deep moral issues.
