Immortals Review: The Gods Get Off Their Golden Highchairs to Kick Ass

The official poster for the Immortals film.
“Immortals” makes the Swords & Sandals Epics great once again. Have you noticed that in between every standout film about the Romans, or the Greeks, or the Spartans, and/or the Gods, there’s an awful movie in the middle? Maybe the Gods don’t want to spoil us. Gladiator was a classic. Then came Troy. That was a bomb. After Troy came Alexander. I fell asleep through that movie. Finally, the Heavens blessed us with an action-packed, stylized blood fest that was 300. Unfortunately, Clash of the Titans comes along and messes up what could’ve been a double whammy of great epic movies. But now with Immortals, it seems the Gods are favoring us once again.
If it isn’t obvious enough, Immortals is a definite must-see especially for those Gladiator-300 fans. In fact, Immortals is what Clash of the Titans should have been but wasn’t. Starring Henry Cavill (also to be the next Superman), he plays as Theseus, the son of a peasant with a heart of a warrior. Theseus is tasked by the Gods to save the whole of Greece from the power-hungry King Hyperion. Mickey Rourke, the bad ass villain that he is, is King Hyperion who rampages all of Greece in search of the Bow Epirus. With this mighty bow, King Hyperion will have the power to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the world’s savage master.
Fortunately, Theseus gets some help from the Gods themselves. That’s right. The Gods finally get off their golden high chairs and bolt down to earth to kick some bad guy butt. And it’s awesome. The fights between humans are remarkable in themselves. But you’ll know there are greater things to come when you see Zeus or Poseidon bolt down to earth to get in on the action. With the post-production 3D effects, the flow between the realms of the Gods and of the humans is surreal. Imagine the highly stylized cinematography of 300 in 3D. That’s what Immortals is and it works extremely well.
At 98 minutes, I actually wished the movie would go on just a little longer. But really, it’s just right. The plot, the acting, the cinematography all interweave perfectly. Kudos to the directors and the producers for making such a great film. And like all great things, you usually don’t want them to end as I felt with this movie. Thank the Heavens and go watch “Immortals” because most likely than not, history will repeat itself and the next movie like this won’t be so great. Ahh, the Gods, how they tease us so.
