Rod Roddenberry

Trek Nation follows the Star Trek philosophy with a son “going boldly where he had never gone before” as Rod Roddenberry finds his father in the legacy he left behind. This documentary is one of discovery. Not only do the viewers get inside views on the mind and thoughts of Gene Roddenberry, but we also see his son, Rod, finding a father he never knew. There have been many Star Trek focused documentaries over the years but Trek Nation is the first this reviewer has seen that goes from the beginning to the end. Well, at least the end of a man’s life but Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry will live on in the legacy of a show that took a simple theme and changed us all forever. To quote Gene Roddenberry, “This is the human adventure that has just begun.”

Gene Roddenberry showed us what our world could be with his vision and did what many teachers around the world try to replicate every day. He taught us to think out of the box. To never accept things as they are but to look at what they could be. He inspired multiple generations with “wonder” and made science “cool.” Star Trek has changed us all and taught us to embrace our differences by celebrating who we are without judging others. It showed us a universe that we all strive for.

For all that Trek Nation gives us on the history and future of Star Trek, Rod Roddenberry shows us the importance of exploring the world we have in front of us while we can. He is gifted like his father. Through this film, we see Rod finding out who his real father was. While there are no specific details given, there was a disconnect between this father and son. Like many of us, Rod was busy finding his own way in life as a teenager. We tend to go through those years distancing ourselves from our parents, never thinking that they might not be there later in life. Like his father, Rod uses film to give us a perspective on what we could be missing. He is showing all of us a “universe” we sometimes ignore.

Trek Nation is a film that everyone should see even if they are not a fan of Star Trek. It will make you laugh and cry and bridges the gap between a documentary and a drama. If your parents are still living you will call them as soon as you finish watching this show. If they are no longer here, you will be digging out the old photographs and reflecting on just what they meant to you. Rod Roddenberry has shown us another “frontier” that deserves to be explored. You can watch the trailer below and Trek Nation will be on the Science Channel on November 30 at 8pm.
