America’s Got Talent 2nd Quarterfinals: Howard and Howie Fight Over Big Barry (7/10/12 Live Recap) |
America’s Got Talent is LIVE from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center! Tonight is the second quarterfinals where 12 acts perform and America votes for only 4 acts to go through to the semifinals. If you can’t watch the show live or you missed somethin’, make sure to keep your eyes peeled on Nerdles as we recap tonight’s show live. (Refresh this page every few minutes for the freshest AGT updates.)
The first act up tonight is Lion Dance Me from San Francisco, California. They’re a Chinese martial art lion dancing group, and they’ve been giving ridiculously dangerous performances throughout their AGT auditions. Tonight, they say they’re going to step it up even more. And step it up they do. The crowd is screamin’ and hollerin’ on their feet. They definitely put on a fun and exciting performance. Howard congratulates them on NOT falling tonight. But he worries that their act will start getting boring soon. Sharon agrees and tells them to shake it up a bit more. Howie, goes further and says he in fact was quite bored.

Turf, the dancer/contortionist street performer performs second. The crowd tonight seems to get louder and louder with every act. Turf gives a phenomenol act. Truly one-of-a-kind, in my opinion, and somehow with all the body twisting and turning, Turf pulls off an entertaining performance. Sharon says it was great but he should incorporate a bit more dancing into his routine. Howie gives him a standing ovation, and calls him a human gumby. Howard agrees with Sharon, and gives him a warning against the group called Unity and Motion, but he believes America will vote him through tonight.

The rock band, The All Ways, gets it’s name, well, from nothing as the band themselves say. Their performance tonight on the AGT covers Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.” Honestly, for me, it sounds amateur. The lead singer sounds like he’s screaming more than singing, and when he does sing, it’s off key. He’s definitely no Steven Tyler. The crowd isn’t as loud this time around. Howie thinks they made the wrong song choice. Howard says they can’t have it “always.” He wasn’t feeling their performance tonight. Sharon wasn’t crazy about their song choice either and she also feels it was more screamo than actually song singing. But, she definitely hopes America votes for them because she thinks they’ve got potential.

Hawley Magic performs next with an act that involves balancing and spinning Jonathan’s wife on a thin metal rod. As he spins her, she drops down halfway into the rod as it appears to jab straight through her abdomen. How did they do that?!? Howard thinks they did a good job, and that they’re on the right track. He’s not too sure yet about America voting for them though. Sharon tells them to be a bit cooler because they look a bit old school. Howie said he liked the “wife-kebab” routine but agress with Sharon – they need to spice it up a bit more.

Dancing troupe, Lisa Clark Dancers, perform a mixture of jazz, contemporary, tap, and hip-hop into their AGT quarterfinals routine. I thought they gave a clean, entertaining performance, but I kept waiting for them to bust it all out and give an extra oomph to their performance. But it doesn’t happen. By the end of their act, Howie pulls an X on them. Howie calls their performance a children’s dance recital. Sharon blames their choreographer and called their music old-school. Howard is a bit easier on them, and calls them talented enough. Unfortunately, he doesn’t believe they’ll get voted on by America tonight.

The Aurora Light Painters perform their unique act. I was completely amazed by their first performance on AGT. It was unique, totally fun, and I’d never seen anything like it before. I hope they pull off something new and different tonight. Their concept for tonight is “monsters under the bed.” Sounds interesting! Painting a girl on a bed, surrounded by bulging lighting eyes that pop up around her, the little girl is scared but seems to eventually fall in love with one of the monsters. Midway through their act, Howard X’s them. I’m surprised the other two didn’t join them. I was a bit confused and kinda left hanging. I was expecting more. Their first performance on AGT was definitely better. Howie says they reached their peak. Howard says they’re a great special effect but without a story they don’t have much going for them. Sharon says they’re lacking in vision and their act wasn’t sophisticated enough.

Fourteen year old singing sensation, Danielle Stallings, performs her number next. Singing Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain”. She’s got a great, wholesome voice for a fourteen year old, and she does do the song justice. Let’s hear the judges opinions. Howard he was wrong when he originally said Danielle wasn’t memorable because tonight she definitely was memorable. Sharon hopes America votes for her. Howie, plugs himself on Twitter again, and quotes a comment from one of his followers saying that Danielle is really, really good.

Acrobatic couple, Donovan and Rebecca, pull off their act now. Flying high in the air above the AGT stage, my mouth just drops down. Donovan is one hell of a strong guy as he carries Rebecca and all her weight first on a single arm and finally on a single palm. There’s even a really sweet moment where they kiss up top. And the crowd just keeps on cheering for them. I love this couple. Sharon calls them strong and flawless, that their performance was so fluid and seamless. Howie agrees, and calls their kissing moment very sweet “when your wife went up on you and kissed you.” That comment turns the judges a little green minded. Howard calls them tremendous, and asks how much Donovan bench presses. Howard lifts 90 pounds, but that’s 10 reps at 90 pounds (I think Donovan does that with his pinky finger alone.) For me, this is the best act so far. Vote for them America!

Guess what “big” act is up next on the AGT stage? From Fort Lauderdale, it’s BIG BARRY! Right. I have no idea how he bested the more deserving acts during the AGT audtions, but hey, he’s here so let’s just have some fun with the guy (which is why I think he got through because he’s more of a funny-joke act than anything serious at all). Decked out in a white tuxedo, he walks down a ramp (he reminds me of Penguin from the old Batman movies), and almost immediately Howard gives him an X. Even with beautiful models catwalking around him, even Sharon gives him a big, fat X.
If Bob Dylan and the Easter Bunny had a baby, Howie says, they would’ve had Big Barry. Howie thinks he’s a great novelty act that people will pay to see. At this point, Howard gets at Howie saying he owes Andrew De Leon, Flo Jo’s daughter, and all the other talented acts an apology for passing Big Barry’s ridiculous act over them. It gets pretty serious, and I think we’re about to actually see a catfight between the two. Fortunately, Sharon calms them down and tells Barry his singing sounds like someone singing on the toilet. Right before we get to commercial, I think Howard is so pissed off at Howie that we see him get up off of his seat, step towards him, and starts madly pointing his fingers at him. In fact, when we get back from the commercial, both of them are still at it.

But now, the show must go on and comedian Tom Cotter performs his act on the AGT stage to turn Howard and Howie’s frowns upside down. He starts off making fun of American idioms that just don’t make sense – “break a leg”, “skin a cat”, “needle in a haystack”, she’s a “party pooper” (to which he comments that she should be kept away from the dip), etc. Howard is smiling from ear to ear, and says he is the guy to beat. Sharon loves him and compliments his perfect timing. Howie says he’s as cool as a cucumber, and a real professional comedian. In fact, Nick is pretty impressed himself. Vote him in America!

Remember Ben Blaque? The crossbow sharp shooter who shot an arrow at his assistant Devan while blindfolded? Yeah, he’s up next and he says he’s going to take his act up another notch. He starts from behind the judges table shooting a yellow balloon over his assitant’s head. Then he shoots the head off a long-stemmed rose from of his assistant’s mouth. Next, he pulls out a quadruple-decked crossbow while his assistant stands next to a wall surrounded by four balloons. He pulls it off and pops all of ‘em. His act definitely got me on the edge of my seat, and it was an entertaining act. Sharon enjoyed Ben’s performance. Howard enjoyed Ben’s assistant Devan. But seriously, he thought it was great, dangerous, and a fun act. Howie loved it and thought it was much better than his past performances. Again, Howard and Howie get at each other when Howard comments that Ben’s acts are the ones that we should be seeing, not acts like Big Barry’s. And again, Sharon tells her “ladies” to calm down and focus.

Tim Hockenberry, often compared to Joe Cocker, says he’s going to give everything he has tonight to set himself apart. Singing a cover of Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” he definitely does set himself apart. Who would’ve thought a Katy Perry cover? Howie says he can actually take the AGT championship. Sharon loved his emotion and his voice. Howard, and I agree with him, says it wasn’t his best performance. His first two songs were actually much better. Nonethelees, Howard does says Tim is his favorite singer, he just made the wrong song choice tonight.

There you go, America. AGT’s next batch of 12 acts. Which 4 will you vote on? Here are my picks:
- Donovan and Rebecca
- Turf
- Tom Cotter
- Tim Hockenberry
*Wildcard: BIG BARRY. Howard is right. Big Barry isn’t very talented at all, BUT Howie is right, too. There’s something about Big Barry that makes him a profitable novelty act. And, if he keeps having beautiful models catwalking around him, then his act might actually be a bit more entertaining.
What do you think? Who are your Top 4 picks? Sound off in the comments below! And, be sure to come back here tomorrow when we see who America actually voted on. See ya’ll then!
